Full Title: JISC DeL eLISA Project (e-Learning Independent Study Skills Award).   
Abstract: This presentation will focus on findings emerging from the JISC DeL eLISA Project (e-Learning Independent Study Skills Award). The aim of eLISA was to enable independent study support for learners and teachers. The project selected, assessed, delivered and evaluated e-learning study skills sequences in LAMS (Learner Activity Management Systems) and Moodle in four main areas – careers, information search, personal statement and report writing, building on prior work funded by the DfES/Greenwich LEA and the LSC.

The project completed its first pilot in March, 2006. A key focus was on the pedagogic implications of study skills/support for e-learning. Results include: e-learning study skills resources, recommendations on using a prototype personalised learning environment (PLE), results from practitioner and learner workshops, an evaluation report and framework of e-learning study skills resources.

Evaluation was conducted by the University of Oxford Learning Technologies Group using questionnaires and observational analysis. Students and teachers were questioned on the use and value of e-learning in study skills. eLISA’s principal findings were that teachers reported generally high levels of student motivation, increased participation and selected improvements in performance and confidence from using study skills sequences. Teachers recognised the value of LAMS and Moodle for reinforcement or extension activities. This session will report on eLISA’s findings and make recommendations for further research in study skills support for independent learning and progression to higher education from schools and colleges.

Prior experience as Director of Lifelong Learning, Executive Director of Student Programmes, Head of IT and Media, Background experience teaching English Literature, Drama, Media Studies, Theatre Arts, ICT/ e-learning in education.
