In the beginning was the word (eLearning) and the word became interaction via multimedia networked computers, spawning a vision of teaching, learning and assessment mediated via the web. It was heralded as a 24/7 just in time experience: teachers would respond at point of need; learners would surf the web, meeting in cyberspace but never needing to gather in person with their peers or tutors.
Experience has moderated this vision, leaving in its wake a more realistic picture of the selective, appropriate use of various technologies. Currently eLearning is perceived as having the potential to provide rich and increasingly differentiated learning opportunities with personalisation at the heart of the development process.
It is even rumoured that, with the convergence and ubiquity of media, information and communication technologies, eLearning is becoming commonplace. In the not so distant future there may only be one ‘e’ in learning!
The University’s Learning and Quality Office invites you to a one day conference on eLearning at the Maritime Greenwich Campus on Wednesday, June 15th 2005. The conference, sponsored by Granada Learning, will focus on ways that teachers and trainers have employed eLearning within their own sector in ‘extending the classroom walls’ – the title of this year’s conference. It will provide an opportunity for practitioners to outline examples of effective practice, share the results of evaluation and indicate lessons learnt.
